New Delhi,Mar,16:The latest World Bank report says progressive story over the overall poverty number at global lever according to report world has achieved its first Millennium Development Goal of reducing extreme poverty to half ahead of the 2015 deadline.

The World Bank's technical definition of extreme poverty demarcates the people living below the expense of $1.25 per day, which is adjusted for purchasing power parity (PPP).

According to the latest report, released by the World Bank as much as 1.29 billion people or what we can say 22 percent of the developing world's headcounts are forced to, live below $1.25 a day, which is significant reduction from 52 percent which was reported in 1981.

"The developing world has made considerable progress in fighting extreme poverty," said Martin Ravallion, the director of the World bank's research group, although that doesn't mean they have comfortable lives.

He further said that "The 663 million people who moved above the poverty lines typical of the poorest countries are still poor by the standards of middle- and high-income countries."

As far as India is concerned, 32.7 percent of the people in country subsist on less than $1.25 or slightly above Rs 60 per day. However when we count on 2$ a day basis than 69 percent population comes under this bracket.

In rural India situations more alarming as, 34.28 percent of the population lives on less than $1.25 a day, down from 43.83 percent in 2005.

In urban India, 28.93 percent people are under extreme poverty, which is down from 36.16 percent in 2005, the report finds.

India's economic growth which is going up with a brisk pace has widened the income inequality in the country, which is reflected by the "Gini coefficient." In India the Gini coefficient has increased from 31 in 1994 to 33 in 2005.

World Bank also confirms that the South Asia is making progress in poverty reduction.

"The pace of improvement between 2005 and 2010 for those living below the $1.25 poverty line has been faster than previously observed," said Rinku Murgai, a lead poverty specialist at the World Bank for South Asia. But the counting of population living below $2 a day continues to be quite high, she said, "and a large number of people remain vulnerable to moving back into poverty."

With only 7 percent of its population classified as extremely poor, Sri Lanka AN Island Nation is the top performer in South Asia; Bhutan a Himalayan Nation follows closely at its heels with 10.2%.

Report finds Bangladesh as the worst performer with as much as 43 percent of population subsist on less than $1.25 a day while most populous nation in the region India is the second-worst performer in South Asia.

As a whole South Asia saw its $1.25 a day poverty rate fall from 61 percent to 36 percent between 1981 and 2008, but the region's poverty count are better only than sub-Saharan Africa, where 47 percent of the population lives in extreme poverty.

Brazil has a significantly higher poverty line of $2.50 a day as compare to India, below which 15 percent of its population falls. However, the inequality in asset distribution is quite steep in Brazil.

The poorest two-fifths of the population in Brazilian together earn less than 10 percent of the national income, whereas in India the two poorest quintiles earn 21 percent of the national income.
